September: Exploring MoMA New York and Other Side Journeys.

At MoMA Matisse "The Piano Lesson"
Our journey this month is starting at  MoMA New York.  I plan to spend the month wandering around MoMA's web site.

I have provided links to the interesting and thought provoking exhibitions that are currently going on with links also to the Multimedia section of their web.  There you will find interactive links to things like "Picasso: Theme and Variation" or  What is A Print? .   Links to Video presentations like this wonderful presentation were history, art & science meet:  Behind the Scenes: Projects 93: Dinh Q. Le´.  And the many Audio presentations links like this talk about the painting: Matisse. Dance(l)

At MoMA Matisse "Dance(l)"
Within each of the MoMA's Collections there are many more links particular to the subject of that department.  And of course for your viewing and study enjoyment they give you access to the actual MoMA collections were they have 6221 artists and 33,137 works on line.

A month will not be enough time to explore all that the MoMA site has to offer.  But it will be enough time to at least get the "lay-of-the-land" sort of speak while learning, being inspired and enjoying the journey at the same time.

And lastly from MoMA they have a free "APP" (currently only for IPhones & ITouch, but Android is on the horizon) check it out: MoMA APP

Onto the film by Megumi Sasaki "Herb & Dorothy",  I'll let the Reviewer's notes peak your interest and tell you a little about this couple:

"Herb & Dorothy transforms potentially dry subject matter with humor and intrigue into a story that will warm artists and collectors to each other, not to mention expose the public to an elusive business. Organized chronologically, Herb & Dorothy profiles the Vogels, a Manhattan couple who met in 1960 and began collecting art with their meager incomes from the post office and the Brooklyn Public Library. Starting at a Robert Mangold opening, the documentary shows the now elderly Vogels in action among artists and curators as they attend events as they have for the past 40 years. The film moves between the Vogels in their art-crammed apartment and interviews with artists such as the Christos, Richard Tuttle, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, James Siena and Chuck Close (ed) who have appreciated the Vogels' loyal patronage."

The film is featured at the Note Book Theatre video on demand from Amazon.com. $2.99.

P.S.  as to how much money I have made via The Notebook Theatre and The Notebook Store for the California Arts Council   $0.00.  I thought this was a good idea, so I'll have to keep working on it. I have a bunch of cousins who own their own businesses probably a good idea would be to talk to them.   In the mean time,  I better get the Arts License Plates I have been putting off :-).

An image to think about . . .  I took this photo of Balzac by Rodin this year at the Norton Simon Museum Pasadena Ca,  And it just so happens that MoMA NY has a very interesting exhibit Original Copy-Photography of Sculpture 1839 to Today .  In the exhibit are some great photos of  Rodin's Balzac by Edward Steichen taken in 1908.  So just click on my photo to experience the effect.  That's it,  I just thought it was cool.

Enjoy!  ... My Cousin Willie turned me on to this and you have got to do this very cool  Interactive film by Chris Milk featuring music "We Use To Wait" built in HTML5 (not certain what HTML5 is other then Chris does and that is all that matters).  You simply enter the address were you grew up,  hold onto you seat and be blown away!

Ted.com ... as Temple Grandin says " ... The world needs all kind of minds."

If you missed my June Blog the featured film was The Horse Boy Directed by Michel Orion Scott.    Temple and others had more to say on this subject in the film and in the extras of that film.   Check it out if this interests you.   I also have the film in The Notebook Theatre "videos on demand" section.

Foodie ... Zen and the Art of Cooking  ..."What is the path to culinary enlightenment?" This episode a famed London Chef who's conviction is "... one should honor the animal by eating it in it's entirety--from nose to tail."  Meet a Washoku expert, who captures " ... the harmonious balance of color, flavors, cooking methods, and the five senses.  "Then a California cheese maker and a New York chocolatier, food artisans show us how they find their Zen through their relationship with food."

Live! at "The Club" - Abbey Lincoln an original Jazz voice, songwriter, arranger, actress and activist.

It looks like I went overboard here, but ...  I knew of her and heard her sing some, I did not know her.  So this month I'm spending sometime with her and listening.  Her passing I can see has affected many, many people and when you get to know her you will see why.  Here is an example I found on YouTube titled Abbey Lincoln-"Down Here Below"-In Memory Of Kenneth Bostock, from a dear friend judebelly .  Abbey touches the mind and the heart, which is our soul.

Radio -- I listen to this every morning on the way to the commuter train last week. Radio is a great place for story telling and the imagination.  I urge you go on this five-part trip down the Congo River with the exceptional story teller Ofeibea Quist-Arcton.

And lastly ... my 100 mile motorcycle ride yesterday to San Diego searching out and photographing the murals around San Diego (I photographed most of them, but not all of them ... yet) and the exhibit at the MCA San Diego's "Viva la Revolucion: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape." Seeing the murals in the context of the city (I still need to think about this experience a little more) and the museum exhibit of these artists showing at the same time at downtown museum location is well worth the effort and time.  More to follow on this soon, but until then check out the slide show and links to the left for more information.

Enough! ... I'm doing a Balzac, to much coffee! ... That's it for now.  Enjoy the adventure!
